Understanding KuneKune Gestation

KuneKune gestation follows the easy-to-remember "3-3-3 rule" – 3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days, or approximately 114 days.

In our experience, first-time mothers (gilts) often follow their own schedules, sometimes delivering a day or two early or late, while experienced sows often go right on schedule. Around day 100, start watching for subtle changes. Your sow may become more restless or start testing out nesting spots. By day 107, she should be settled in her farrowing area with plenty of clean bedding. The final days bring more obvious signs: a swollen vulva, milk letdown, and that telltale nesting urgency where she just can't get the bedding arranged quite right.

Most KuneKune litters range from 4 to 8 piglets, though first-time gilts often have smaller litters. Having your dates mapped out ahead of time means you can be prepared with supplies, arrange your schedule for those critical first 24 hours, and know exactly when you'll start losing sleep!
